Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill on Yaz’s past and future

Den of Geek talked to Doctor Who actress Mandip Gill about her character Yasmin Khan. It’s a very interesting read.

DENOFGEEK.COM: The Thirteenth Doctor wasn’t the only new adventurer we met in Sunday’s history-making Doctor Who series eleven premiere. We were also introduced to the Doctor’s latest Companions—or, as they’re called in this season, Friends.

We had a chance to chat with Mandip Gill, who plays Yaz, about where her character comes from and where her character is going now that she’s been swept up into all of time and space alongside the Doctor.

“She’s got a family unit back in Sheffield that she’s very close to,” Gill said of Yaz. “So she has that home connection to Sheffield and to her family. Like we focus on Ryan and Graham’s background [in the season premiere], we do go on to learn about Yaz’s background at some point.”

One of the details about Yaz’s background we do get in the series eleven premiere is her previous connection to Ryan (Tosin Cole). The two characters went to school together, but haven’t seen each other in a long while—long enough that they don’t recognise each other immediately.

“They are like brother and sister,” said Gill of the dynamic, referencing a moment in the car in the season premiere when Yaz bugs Ryan to hand over his phone, which he does with an eye roll.

Gill did tease that the Yaz/Ryan relationship could develop into something else, saying: “They could be a little bit more, because you see that really kind of flirty smile that she gives him when she realised that it’s Ryan and that he is grown up and whatnot. But we have not touched upon that yet. I want to say, not never… but I think, at this point, he is that annoying brother.”

We also know from the first episode that Yaz is a police officer. It might not be what is expected of her, said Gill, but: “I think she does that job because she likes to help people and she is good at helping people.

Welcome to Mandip-Gill.Com

Hello and welcome to Mandip Gill Online/Mandip-Gill.com. Following Mandip’s debut in Doctor Who last night, this site has been opened to support Mandip and her growing career. If you think Mandip looks familiar, you may recognise her for her role as Phoebe McQueen in Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks.

As previously mentioned, Mandip is playing Yasmin Khan, one of three new companions for the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker). The first episode, entitled The Woman Who Fell To Earth, is thought to have attracted 8.2 million viewers.

There isn’t much content at the moment as Mandip’s career is just getting started, but I wanted to make sure the site was launched from the start of her Doctor Who journey.

So far you’ll find event pictures from 2018 in our gallery, and a small selection of Doctor Who images. Please check back later for more updates, and in the meantime, follow the site on Twitter for updates as they happen.

Doctor Who’s Mandip Gill says Jodie Whittaker has “nailed it” as the Doctor ahead of season 11 premiere

DIGITALSPY.COM: Doctor Who star Mandip Gill has praised new Doctor Jodie Whittaker, saying that she “really is the Doctor” ahead of the show’s series 11 premiere tonight (October 7).

The actress, who plays the Thirteenth Doctor’s friend Yasmin Khan in the new series, revealed on Sunday Brunch this morning that fans won’t need to take any time to get used to the new Doctor.

“She’s absolutely great, and I’m not just saying this because she’s a friend,” Mandip explained to hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer.

“She just genuinely has nailed it. She’s the Doctor – she literally is the Doctor. There were no, ‘Maybe she’ll become the Doctor in a few episodes’. She completely is.”

The actress also added that while she doesn’t know what will happen after the episode premieres, she’s willing to embrace any changes that follow.

“I don’t know what to expect,” she added. “I will embrace it if there is change. But I’d like to be able to go into town with no make-up on!”

Whittaker, on the other hand, is taking everything in her stride, with Mandip adding that the actress doesn’t seem fazed at all about the huge role she’s taking over.

“I’m not quite sure she understands the gravitas of it because she just takes it in her stride and is really cool about it,” she continued. “It’s a massive responsibility. I genuinely don’t think I would be able to do what she does – the amount of lines she learns on a daily basis!”

Talking about her character, Mandip says that Yasmin is a “very capable” girl who may just get more than she bargains for.

“One day she phones her boss and says, ‘Look I want more’, and she gets more – and it completely changes her life,” she teased. “And that’s all I’m going to say.”

Doctor Who returns with ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’ tonight (October 7) at 6.45pm on BBC One, while Sunday Brunch continues on Channel 4.
